Calcium and Magnesium Supplements and Their Effects on Your Blood Pressure

Magnesium Supplements and Your Blood Pressure

The concepts outlined in the other magnesium articles also come into play with your blood pressure. Magnesium helps your muscles relax right? Well, the inside walls of all your arteries contain a thin wall of muscle that is regulated by a large number of factors. In the case of magnesium, it's required to help that muscle relax!

Therefore, magnesium will help control high blood pressure by preventing these arteries from constricting too much. On the other hand, too much magnesium can cause a decrease in blood pressure.

It's important to realize that these are all theories based on observations and does not apply to every person. But there are some good correlations!

Are You Still With Me?

Think of a wide open hose with water freely flowing through it. Now, let's step on the hose...

What happens...?

The pressure behind your foot rises dramatically. Your foot on the hose represents either the absence of magnesium or an excess of calcium. In essence, it's the clamped-down artery that is not allowing blood to flow past the obstruction.

When this type of situation happens throughout your body, blood pressure will increase. Thus, regulation of magnesium also regulates your blood pressure!

Studies have shown that a diet high in magnesium has positive effects on a person's life who suffers from either hypertension or prehypertension.

How about an interesting correlation with pregnancy?
