Pre-eclampsia is a condition in which a pregnant woman develops extremely high blood pressure (among other things) in the last month before giving birth. In the medical field, it is common practice to supplement these women with magnesium to help control this type of "vasospasm" - or a sustained contraction of those little muscles in the walls of your arteries (described here).
Always ask your doctor! If it's not necessary to take additional magnesium supplements, then don't take them. Although it is likely that your doctor will suggest a multivitamin containing a good amount of folic acid, iron and magnesium.
Blood pressure and diabetes are also highly correlated with each other...read why!
