Magnesium Supplements and Colon Cancer

Magnesium Supplements and Colon Cancer

There has been some association in recent and past studies that women who supplemented with magnesium ended up with a decreased risk of developing colon cancer later in life, especially when taking in more than 250mg/day.

Everyone reading this page, put on your thinking caps. Correlations exist all over the place, but do they actually have meaning? Is this a direct cause-effect relationship? These are all things that should be considered when reading an article or research study.

At this time, there is no direct evidence indicating that magnesium alone will result in a decrease in colon cancer. There are correlations, but no actual proof.

Here's an example. It turns out that people in San Francisco have a much higher risk of developing gastric cancer.

Wait, what?! That's right. Look for proof.

Let's think about this. San Francisco has a huge Japanese and Asian population. In that specific genetic and environmental subset, the incidence of gastric cancer will be higher. The single act of living in San Francisco does not increase your risk of developing gastric cancer!

See what I mean? We need to examine these correlations and find the missing links. Again, there's no direct link between magnesium supplements and reducing the risk of colon cancer.
