An asthma attack occurs because the muscles lining the airway contract and obstruct the ability of your lungs to take in air (a.k.a. bronchospasm). How can we correlate this with magnesium?
Well, magnesium is required to help muscles relax. If this is truly the case, then magnesium will be beneficial to help decrease the duration of an asthma attack. In fact, this technique is often used in hospitals for the treatment of severe attacks.
I'm not saying to chug down a bottle of magnesium when you're having an asthma attack...this is actually the wrong thing to do. The magnesium preparation given in a hospital is much different from that in a bottle you bought at the pharmacy.
If you do have asthma, don't be fooled into thinking that it's because your diet is low in magnesium. This is never the case. Asthma is a condition which is determined by too many factors to count. Taking magnesium over the long term for the purpose of curing your asthma is probably a waste of money.
