Remember those pesky little muscles on the insides of your arteries (more info.)?
Well, it turns out that contraction of these tiny muscles in particular parts of the brain is the most likely cause of most types of migraine, especially those with a corresponding aura (seeing flashing lights and wavy lines are most common).
This "vasospasm", or constriction, of arteries in the brain secondarily results in the dilation of these same blood vessels due to a reflex response of the nervous system. The result of the dilation is a painful migraine.
This is why the aura shows up about 30 minutes prior to the onset of the headache!!
With that said, magnesium supplements, which are helpful for relaxing muscle, may be useful to help prevent migraine onset but shouldn't be considered a viable therapy for the headache itself (the arteries are already dilated!).
There are plenty of other treatment modalities that have been more extensively studied and proven to stop migraines and prevent their recurrence.
