Benefits of Magnesium Supplements

What's not to love about this mineral? It has beneficial aspects to many parts of our lives! But remember that moderation is always the key. Both too little and too much magnesium, especially if you're taking magnesium supplements, can be extremely detrimental.

So let's get started about learning about this all-important mineral. After all, we need it for daily functioning.

Why Might You Need Magnesium Supplements?

Have you read the page about glycolysis and how ATP is generated? Well, magnesium is a metal that is required in this process. In fact, without magnesium, energy can not be produced! Every last cell in your body needs magnesium to produce its own energy.

Not only that, but magnesium is also needed for the production of hundreds of enzymes that allow your body to function correctly and efficiently. The benefits of magnesium are truly numerous!

  • Maintenance of strong bones, teeth and cartilage

  • Allows the relaxation of muscles

  • Helps regulate blood pressure

  • Promotes normal electrical conduction of the heart

  • Promotes healthy nerve conduction to and from the brain and spinal cord

  • Possible benefits in Diabetes, asthma, migraines, PMS....and more!
  • Magnesium deficiency would essentially result in the opposite of the above table (osteoporosis, spasticity, heart arrhythmia, high blood pressure, seizures/muscle weakness, and many others).

    Is that enough for you?

If not, then I should add that the benefits of vitamins and minerals not mentioned here could never be realized without the presence of magnesium in your body! For example, calcium and vitamin C are especially reliant on the magnesium for proper functioning.

In fact, it is known that magnesium is more effective when levels of vitamin D, vitamin C, thiamine, potassium and calcium are all in balance.

On the other hand, taking in alcohol, huge amounts of calcium and the other fat-soluble vitamins (specifically vitamin A, vitamin E and vitamin K) may decrease the absorption of magnesium.

Magnesium itself is one of the most abundant minerals in your body - any given individual may contain nearly 30g of magnesium! Why so much?!

Most of this magnesium is contained in your bones, teeth and, believe it or not, in your blood. Circulating magnesium is used for the regulation of muscle contractions, nerve impulses, cardiac conduction and blood clotting.

For example, the inability to relax a muscle can be extremely devastating in certain instances. Think about what would happen if both opposing muscles contract at once, like your biceps and triceps. The end result could be a fracture. This is one reason why doctors always check magnesium and calcium in a patient with muscle spasms...

If any abnormality exists, then a simple therapeutic intervention can correct the whole problem! Sounds genius, right?
